The legal cannabis market has seen exponential growth, with increasing acceptance and changing legislation paving the way for a plethora of both recreational and medicinal uses. One of the most popular digital platforms serving this burgeoning industry was Leafly. However, in response to their decision to raise rates for dispensaries, a pressing need for an alternative, equally informative and user-friendly app emerged. The demand was clear: a platform focused on the users' needs and interests, offering comprehensive, accurate, and unbiased information about cannabis.
Recognizing the diverse demographic that spans from long-time cannabis users to first-timers, our design approach embraced a crucial understanding: the universal importance of feeling seen, heard, and respected. Cannabis, despite its growing acceptance, is still a subject of social taboos and misunderstanding. It was crucial for us to break through these barriers with our design, emphasizing empathy and understanding as the cornerstones of our user experience. By striving to 'stay on the same level' as our users, we were able to create an app that feels approachable and non-judgmental. The language used is friendly and accessible, the information is presented without bias, and the community platform fosters an environment of mutual respect and learning. By understanding and mirroring the evolving journey of the cannabis consumer, we have succeeded in creating an interface that feels less like a tool and more like a trusted friend. This human-centered approach underpins the strength of our app - an inclusive digital space where everyone, irrespective of their knowledge or experience with cannabis, can feel empowered and informed.
Our objective was two-fold: firstly, to create a brand that reflected the values of the cannabis community - transparency, inclusivity, and dedication to knowledge. Secondly, we aimed to design a prototype for an app that would serve as a comprehensive informational hub for all things cannabis-related, with an emphasis on user-friendly interface and features. This app was not only meant to serve those within the cannabis industry, but also novices, patients, caregivers, and curious individuals seeking knowledge about cannabis.

Strain Explorer: A comprehensive database of different cannabis strains, each with detailed descriptions, effects, reviews, and recommended uses. The explorer also includes a visual chart to help users understand the different types of strains (Indica, Sativa, hybrid) and their typical effects.
Dispensary Finder: A map-based search engine for locating dispensaries. This feature shows details like the operating hours, available strains, prices, and customer ratings. It also includes a price comparison tool.
Cannabis Laws: A feature that provides updated information on cannabis laws across different regions. This tool helps users understand the legal landscape of cannabis in their area.
Research Digest: A weekly digest of the latest cannabis research in layman's terms. This feature helps users stay informed about the potential benefits and risks of cannabis use.
Community: A moderated discussion platform for users to ask questions, share experiences, and engage in meaningful conversations about cannabis.
The end product was an intuitive, easy-to-use protoype for a mobile application that serves as a trustworthy guide in the world of cannabis. It provides clear, in-depth information on strains, dispensaries, the latest research, and laws.
The design of the app is clean and intuitive, with clear navigation, straightforward language, and engaging visuals. We prioritized accessibility, making sure the app is fully usable for people with different levels of digital proficiency. View the prototype here.
